THE DRINKING WATER FROM JAKOBSTADS VATTEN SHOULD BE BOILED

Jakobstads Vatten supplies the city of Jakobstad with domestic water. A small amount of Jakobstads Vatten’s water has also been delivered to Vikarholmen and Furuholmen in Larsmo. The routine water sample taken on 22.4.2024 has been found to also contain enterococci. All drinking water and water used for cooking should be boiled for 5 minutes.

The water company will initiate more effective chlorination of the domestic water and there will be a stronger smell of chlorine than usual. Chlorine kills harmful microbes. The chlorine in the water does not cause health problems, it ensures the microbiological quality of domestic water. You can wash yourself as normal with the water and you can wash dishes with unboiled water, but they must be carefully dried after washing. Environmental Health Kallan will take new samples on Wednesday 24.4.2024.
The notice to boil water remains in force until further notice. Enterococci are intestinal bacteria, which should not be present in domestic water. Their presence indicates that the household water is contaminated with e.g. surface water.
